One visit, rooms heated through

Bed bug heat treatment in Liverpool

Heat treatment raises a room, and everything in it, to a temperature bed bugs and their eggs cannot survive, and holds it there long enough to reach the inside of mattresses, sofas and skirting gaps. It is usually done in one long visit with no insecticide on the bed.

It costs more than a spray course: typically £700 to £1,100 for a one-bed flat and £1,000 to £1,700 for a three-bed house. For landlords between tenancies, and for hotels, the time saved often makes up the difference.

How a heat day runs

  1. Survey

The rooms are measured, the power supply checked and a list of items to remove is agreed. In flats, the building's alarms and sprinklers are discussed.

  2. Preparation

Heat-sensitive items come out: medicines, aerosols, candles, vinyl records, instruments, plants and pets. Bedding is washed and dried hot.

  3. Heating

Electric heaters and fans raise the rooms and hold them at temperature while sensors in the coolest spots confirm it has been reached throughout.

  4. Cool down

Rooms are cooled and ventilated, furniture is put back and any visible dead bugs vacuumed up.

  5. Check

A follow-up check or call a few weeks later confirms there are no new bites or signs.

Heat in Liverpool homes

The housing stock decides how easy a heat job is.

Terraced houses are usually straightforward: each house can be sealed and heated on its own, and the solid party walls hold the heat. Bay-fronted terraces with large front rooms and high ceilings need more heaters and a longer run.

Flats in converted Georgian and Victorian houses around the Georgian Quarter, Toxteth and Aigburth have timber floors and shared stairs, so heat can drive a few bugs into the flats next door. A good specialist will ask about the neighbours and may suggest a check there afterwards.

City-centre apartment blocks need the most planning: fire alarm and sprinkler arrangements with the managing agent, a suitable electrical supply, and lift access for the equipment. Book the survey early if you need heat before a check-in date.

What to take out before heat

Must come out
Aerosols, lighters, gas canisters, medicines, candles, crayons and lipsticks, and anything that could melt or burst.
Best out
Plants, fish tanks, musical instruments, vinyl, photographs and artwork, and anything with a battery you would not leave on a radiator.
Stays in
Beds, sofas, wardrobes and clothes. These are the point: heat reaches the bugs inside them.
Pets
Out of the property for the day, with their bedding washed hot.

Heat treatment questions

Does heat treatment kill bed bug eggs?

Yes, when the whole room reaches and holds the target temperature. That is its main advantage over spraying, which relies on return visits to catch newly hatched bugs.

How long does heat treatment take?

Most of a working day for a house, and about half a day for a single room or studio. The property is out of use for that day.

Is heat safe for furniture and electronics?

Most household items are fine. Remove the items on the specialist's list. Televisions and computers are usually left switched off and unplugged.

Will bed bugs come back after heat?

Not from the treated rooms, if the heat reached every spot. They can come back from a neighbouring flat or new luggage, which is why flats and hotels check next door.

Can heat be used in a city-centre apartment?

Usually, with the managing agent's agreement on fire alarms and sprinklers, and enough power for the heaters. Some buildings restrict it; ask early.
